| Description |
First introduced in 1970, the “Phoenix” Halon 1301 Fire Suppression System was one of the first of its type to be accepted for use by all the major sanctioning bodies. These systems have proven their value by suppressing fires which could have resulted in the loss of valuable equipment as well as causing painful if not fatal injuries.
Halon 1301 is a colorless, odorless, electrically non-conductive vapor that puts out a fire differently than any other extinguishing agent. Most other extinguishants, carbon dioxide, water, or foam work physically. They attack fire by smothering, cooling or separating fuel from oxygen. Halon 1301 works chemically to halt fire. It decompses in a flame and actually stops the combustion process itself by breaking the chain reactions which propagate from one fuel molecule to another. That’s why Halon 1301 puts out a fire faster and prevents rekindling or reflash as long as the initial concentration of Halon in the area’s atmosphere is maintained. Furthermore, DuPont Halon 1301 is low in toxicity, does not damage property and leaves no residue behind.
Halon 1301 is chemically known as bromotriflouromethane, CBrF2, and offers unusual advantages as a safe and effective fire extinguishing agent.
On a weight-of-agent basis, Halon 1301 is the most effective gaseous extinguishing agent available and is approximately equivalent to dry sodium based powder.
Halon 1301 is especially attractive due to the combination of compact storage volume, low vision obstruction, lack of particulate residue, rapid mixing with air and low toxicity.
Halon 1301 is safe for delicate electronic or mechanical equipment as it leaves no after-fire residue. Halon 1301 is an outstanding nonconductor of electricity and has twice the dielectric strength of carbon dioxide nitrogen or air.
Corrosion tests indicate that most materials such as Steel, Titanium, Magnesium, Copper, Brass and Aluminum are unaffected by Halon 1301. |
